Frequently Asked Questions

 Where is the clinic located?

  • The Georgia State University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic is located at 30 Pryor Street, Atlanta, GA at the corner of Pryor and Decatur Streets, in the College of Education & Human Development Building on the eighth floor.

Does your clinic validate parking?

  • No. The clinic does not validate parking for any of our clients. There are several pay lots surrounding the College of Education & Human Development. In addition, the building is easily accessible via MARTA.

I’ve heard that students provide services. Is that true?

  • Yes. Graduate students in the Communication Disorders program provide all services in the clinic. The students are supervised by licensed speech-language pathologists or audiologists during evaluations, screenings, and therapy sessions.

How do I know I’m receiving good treatment?

  • Each client’s therapy program is supervised by a licensed speech-language pathologist. The supervisor monitors the student clinician via video monitor during therapy sessions and will assist student clinicians during the session if necessary. If you have questions that cannot be answered by the student clinician the supervisor is available to discuss your questions or concerns.

What time will my therapy be scheduled?

  • Therapy typically is scheduled either twice weekly for 50 or 60 minutes or once weekly for 90 minutes. The Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic is open Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Therapy is scheduled based on clinician availability. Each semester clients provide preferences for their appointment times.

Can I leave my child alone during therapy?

  • No. Our policies require that parents or a responsible adult remain in the clinic area while children are being treated.

I’ve received the case history form, what’s next?

  • After the case history form is completed and sent back to the clinic the information will be reviewed by the Clinic Director. If no further information is needed clients will be contacted and advised that the information has been received and that they will be contacted in the future to schedule an evaluation. Clients will be provided an approximate date on when they can be expect to be contacted regarding scheduling.

Do I have to receive services at Georgia State University once I’ve been evaluated?

  • No. Our clients are not required to receive services at our clinic after evaluation. If speech-language therapy is recommended it can be completed at a facility of your choice.

Do I have to be evaluated at Georgia State University to be seen there for therapy?

  • No. If clients have been evaluated at another facility (for example a private speech clinic) they are eligible for services at Georgia State University. Submit a copy of the evaluation report with the Georgia State case history.

Will therapy be observed by anyone other than family?

  • Yes. Therapy may be observed by student observers enrolled in communication disorders classes. Therapy sessions may be videotaped by faculty members in CSD for educational purposes. Student observers receive training in confidentiality and professional behavior prior to observing.

Can I record the session on my own personal electronic device?

  • No. Therapy and evaluation session must not be recorded by clients or family members via phones or other recording devise either live or though the observation mirror. Recording session is a violation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Clinicians are students at Georgia State University and FERPA prohibits disclosure of personally identifiable educational information by others.

Can I request that no one observe my therapy sessions?

  • No. Because this is an educational facility, observation is an important part of our program. If you are not comfortable with student observers, Georgia State University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic may not be the best facility for your needs.

How long can I receive services?

  • Services are provided until clients reach a satisfactory level of functional communication. However, because this is a teaching facility, there is no guarantee of continued services and some clients may be discharged before they think they are ready. If the severity of the communication disorder is not high enough to provide a good learning experience for our students that client may be discharged or recommended to seek services elsewhere. In addition, some semesters, more clients request therapy than we can accommodate. In that case, we use factors such as client disorder, scheduling needs, and supervisor availability to determine who is enrolled in therapy.

Do you take insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare?

  • No. The Georgia State University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic does not treat Medicare or Medicaid beneficiaries and we do not bill private insurance. We accept cash or checks for payment. No client will be denied services due to inability to pay full fees. A sliding fee scale is available for clients who require financial assistance.

Do you take credit cards for payment?

  • No. Payment may be remitted via cash or check.

When will my session be canceled if I’m running late?

  • Typically, clients who are more than 20 minutes late have their session canceled for that day.

Are services ever terminated during the semester?

  • Yes. A client’s therapy program may be canceled for the semester after three absences, no-shows, or late arrivals (more than 20 minutes). If a client cannot keep their appointment it is important to notify the student clinician and/or the clinic office as soon as possible.

Can I make-up a missed session?

  • Yes. Make-up sessions can be scheduled. The make-up session times are arranged on an individual basis and based on the schedules of the client, clinician, and supervisor.
